Locating the Cause of Poor Control Performance, and Obtaining Operational Excellence

The LG Caltex refinery located in Yeosu, South Korea is one of the largest refining and petrochemical complexes in the world. LG Caltex has implemented site-wide control loop performance monitoring solution to improve and sustain their process control performance in critical areas. Over 800 controllers from selected process units are being continuously monitored and maintained using a solution from Matrikon Inc. This paper discusses the challenges associated with maintaining a large asset base of process controls along with new technologies developed to address control performance issues in the refining and petrochemical industries. Findings and results from the Yeosu site are discussed and presented.
