It is strongly recommended that anyone taking WS-130-2E have previously taken ME-200-3E or SE-100-3E or the equivalent.

This course will be taught over the course of two days to professionals concerned with process performance.
The course will follow a modular schedule with the following structure:

Day 1: Advanced Strategies Based on PID Control

Enhanced PID Control
  • Cascade control
  • Selective control
  • Override control
  • Coarse fine control
  • Static and dynamic decoupling
  • Obtaining the decoupling models
  • Hands on with decoupling control
Feedforward Control
  • Static and dynamic
  • Obtaining the FF model and tuning
  • Non-linear feedforward control
  • Using many feedforward signals on the same variable
  • Hands on with feedforward control
Day 2: Beyond PID Control

Dynamic Modeling & Simulation to Solve Process Control Problems
  • Using empirical models
  • Using dynamic material and energy balances
  • Case Study: Distillation column overhead condenser pressure study
Fuzzy Logic
  • Fuzzy sets
  • Fuzzy rules
  • Fuzzification and defuzzification
  • Hands on with fuzzy logic
Multivariable Process Control/APC
  • Differentiating between MPC, APC, Expert Systems, Fuzzy Logic, and Advanced Regulatory Control
  • The difference between feedforward, feedback, and MPC
  • Theory and components of MPC
  • Implementation of MPC
  • Hands on with MPC/APC
Presented by: Dr. Hank Brittain
Dr. Hank Brittain holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Tech, Atlanta. He has over 20 years experience as a process control engineer and has spent 15 years optimizing processes for a wide variety of industries, including consumer products, crude oil extraction and separation onshore and offshore, refining, chemical production, power generation and boiler control, mining processing, water purification, and NASA Rocket HVAC control. He has trained thousands of engineers, technicians, and managers in China, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Mexico, Canada, South America, Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States.
