Real-time KPI Visualization for BlackBerry
Everyday, you are challenged to make decisions on the fly. This
challenge is intensified by a general lack of information to guide
your decision. Do any of these obstacles to informed decision
making sound familiar?
- Data comes from different systems and vendors
- Integrated data is not real-time
- Numerous systems require a lot of training
- Some systems require dedicated licenses to use
- Significant time and effort goes into consolidating data
Make Informed Operational Decisions
The ability to make informed operational decisions is possible only
if you have access to all of the required operational data—not just
part of it. Without access to the whole operational picture,
decisions become guesses that could result in quality issues, poor
performance and decreased profitability.
To help guide informed decisions, you need a real-time key performance
indicator (KPI) monitoring system that features:
- Web-based decision support platform
- Universal connectivity
- Complete integration of existing systems in the visualization layer
- KPIs created and visualized using data from any system
- Automatic notification of events
- Powerful dashboards that combine process graphics, trends, KPIs, charts, reports and more
Operational Insight BlackBerry System
As a centralized monitoring solution, Matrikon’s Operational Insight
(OI) provides fast, reliable and easy access to real-time plant data.
Unlike vendor dependent, thick-client or point solutions, Operational
Insight uses standards-based technology to connect to all data sources.
Coupled with a robust and configurable dashboard interface, data has
never been easier to trend, chart, monitor, report, share and display.
Now you can take the power of Operational Insight with you wherever you
go; OI is available for BlackBerry devices and enables you to see both
real-time and historical displays of process variables on BlackBerry web
browsers.
Real-Time Snapshot of Process Variables
BlackBerry users can view unit overview screens, which display the unit's
configured process variables. The values displayed are current to the
moment the screen is loaded. Each unit screen can be configured to display
any data point accessible through Operational Insight. As displayed in
Figure 1, the color of the displayed process variable value will be red,
orange or green based on a configurable set of data ranges, highlighting
specific data points needing immediate attention.

Historical Trends of Process Variables
The unit overview screens also contain links to trends which are created
with the Operational Insight module NetTrend. The data contained in the
trends is current up to the moment the image is loaded. The image of the
trend can be saved to the handheld device for review at a later time or for
inclusion in a report. An example of a historical trend is displayed in
Figure 2.

Simple Configuration
For configuration of the units, a web page provides process variables and
trend links, as displayed in Figure 3. The web page allows for centralized
administration of the BlackBerry system without the administrator risking
modification of highly structured .xml files and provides a grid based system
for adding, modifying and deleting units, process variables and trend links.
It uses Operational Insight’s tag browser for straightforward process variable
configuration, providing mask assisted searches and selection from a tag list
for adding process variables and avoiding the need for tag names and data
sources to be typed in manually.

real-time and historical plant data—an essential tool for making informed
decisions on-the-go.
