OPC Without DCOM Headaches

Wednesday
April 12, 2006
1:30 PM to 2:30 PM EST
(GMT -5:00)

Use tunneling technology to exchange data without the DCOM Headaches.

This on-line seminar will explain how new OPC tunneling technology can make it possible to exchange data across WANS, domains and plants without dealing with the dreaded DCOM issue.

Upon completion of this on-line seminar, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the benefits of OPC Tunneling technology
  • Identify the problems that exist today when exchanging data between devices and applications
  • Know how OPC Tunneller exchanges data between WANS or different domains without the use of DCOM

Windows Security (DCOM) configuration for OPC

Wednesday
April 26, 2006
1:30 PM to 2:30 PM EST
(GMT -5:00)

Defeat your DCOM Problems by leveraging OPC.

DCOM is the number one problem reported when working with OPC applications. This webcast will explain the limitations of DCOM, recognize DCOM symptoms, and manage DCOM within current operations.

  • Windows Security (DCOM) Overview
  • Access Control Lists (ACL)
  • Security Process Categories
  • Windows Domains versus Workgroups
  • Using DCOMCNFG
  • Configuring DCOM
  • Launch, Activation and Access permissions
  • Best Practices

MatrikonOPC Tunneller 2.3.1.0

The new release of MatrikonOPC's Tunneller 2.3.1.0 provides an even easier, and more reliable way of effectively communicating between networked computers. It does away with the headaches typically associated with DCOM configuration.

It is also now optimized for low-bandwidth infrastructures. The main issues that the new Tunneller 2.3.1.0 addresses are:
  • It allows cross domain and cross workgroup communication with minimal network configuration.
  • It bypasses Microsoft Windows network authentication used by DCOM.
  • Provides a finer level of control over communication timeouts.
The new MatrikonOPC Tunneller 2.3.1.0 is available for download by clicking the button below.

OPC Messenger

OPC Messenger is an OPC A&E client that will send messages to alert an operator of alarm and event conditions. OPC Messenger provides the ability to connect to multiple OPC A&E Event servers, and includes the Matrikon OPC Server for Events that can monitor OPC DA servers for set conditions and generate alarm and event notifications. Messages can be delivered to an operator by email, or can execute batch file code to trigger additional automatic actions.

There have been various attempts at applying industrial standards (OPC) to SCADA-based implementations. To ease in the success of integrations, and avoid cost overruns, integrators must know the difference between "plant-based" OPC mentality and Scada applications.

MatrikonOPC Desktop Historian
New MatrikonOPC Desktop Historian 3.0 makes a great application even better. MatrikonOPC Desktop Historian is still the most affordable, quickest to install, and most easily configurable Historian on the market today. The new 3.0 version boasts a "Microsoft Excel" like user interface to allow it to be even easier to use and allow for easier tag management. Other new features for Version 3.0 include the addition of a File Collector, and a 30 day demo version of MatrikonOPC's ODBC server for HDA.

Nova Chemicals Implements the MatrikonOPC Client for ODBC
As part of an upgrade project, the company was looking for a simple and reliable way to collect and transfer data from their new on-line gas chromatographs to their process DCS (Distributed Control System). Unable to find a satisfactory solution on the market, they opted for a custom solution to get the needed results. For help, NOVA turned to MatrikonOPC, and implemented the OPC Client for ODBC.

Ask The OPC Experts...

Question: When should you consult an OPC solutions architect?

Answer: OPC enables data to be transferred between applications using an agreed upon standard. In its simplest presentation, OPC enables moving data from one application to another (bringing data from a PLC driver into an HMI for example). The reality is very complex problems can be solved with appropriately deployed OPC components. The architecting of a data infrastructure that leverages OPC can involve a great deal of engineering expertise to maximize the data throughput, while minimizing the complexity of the solution. I would argue that one should involve an experienced OPC solutions architect whenever OPC is being deployed.
