Question:
I am currently using SIEMENS S7-200 and LabVIEW version 8.0. What I would like to know is what OPC Server should I need?
Answer:You will need an OPC Server which speaks the native protocol of your PLC. An OPC server for the Siemens S7-200 PLC will talk natively using the PPI protocol. The OPC Server will then "serve" OPC DA (Data Access for real-time streaming updates) to any compliant OPC Client interface such as your LabVIEW software.
An OPC server is software. Think of it like the relationship between your computer and your printer. You need a printer driver to interface between your computer and printer. The printer driver is installed on your computer and talks to your printer. This is similar to OPC. OPC Servers are used to control devices speaking the native language the data source was designed to understand. So, in your case, you would install an OPC driver on your computer that has LabVIEW on it. LabVIEW's OPC Client interface would make requests to the OPC Driver that would then, in turn, make requests to your PLC. This is how you get your PLC to interact with LabVIEW. The OPC Server you need is specific to your PLC. Please contact a MatrikonOPC Solutions Architect with any OPC-related questions or for more information on which OPC Server best suits your needs.
