Question: We use a custom-built VB application
developed in-house for logging real-time sensor readings into
a relational database using SQL/ODBC. We had some
documentation but it is now obsolete due to tweaks and
fixes that have crept in over time. We recently upgraded our
equipment and again have to figure out how to modify the
VB code to accommodate the changes without breaking
what is already working.

I am getting real tired of having to dive into the code every time we need to change a tag or connect to a different database. Is there anything off the shelf that would do the same thing without all the hacking?

This is a common problem. Getting into a custom coded solution for logging OPC data to ODBC-based databases is relatively straightforward but maintaining that solution is NOT. There are many reasons for this: original developers retire, documentation falls quickly out-of-date or is not there to begin with, communication specifications evolve, and solution requirements change. Standards-based, off-the-shelf-solutions avoid such issues because the vendor maintains them.
In your case, the MatrikonOPC Client for ODBC is the solution. It can connect to OPC Servers and log their data to any database supporting ODBC like MSSQL, Oracle, Access, and more without any programming.
