New Features:
  • Access OPC Servers using OPC UA, OPC Classic, or OPC Tunneller.
  • Tag-level security using powerful user-based permissions combined with standard OPC Security 1.0
  • Compatible with all certified OPC DA clients and servers, regardless of vendor.

    Question:

    Hello Experts.

How do I make sure the changes I’m making in DCOM doesn’t open any security holes, and how do I set it up so only certain people can access certain tags in the system?

    "DCOM-fused" Dave in Pittsburgh.

    Answer (Sean Leonard, VP MatrikonOPC):
Using proper DCOM configuration settings for OPC communication does not open any security holes, unless of course you are opening it up to all users and effectively shutting off security altogether. Follow this link for the step-by-step DCOM configuration settings to suit your particular Microsoft operation system.

    Windows XPSP2

The second part of your question requires more than DCOM configuration settings. Microsoft DCOM security is limited to per user access on an application basis. That means a particular user has access to all OPC Server functions or none of them. DCOM does not provide OPC tag level granularity. Only OPC Servers that support the OPC Security 1.0 specification provide that functionality. If your OPC Server supplier does not support OPC Security, you can still get per-user-per-tag level security by using a MatrikonOPC Security Gateway.

    Spotlight on Integrators

How Can I, as a System Integrator, prosper in a turbulent economy?

The Chinese proverb "every crisis is an opportunity" is true. Especially if you are a System Integrator in today’s volatile economy. While companies in every sector are cutting back on expansion projects and downsizing their workforces, they are also scrambling to maintain and improve production numbers, reduce energy consumption, and extend the life of their production assets.

The success of such efforts depends on how well these companies can utilize the various control automation assets scattered throughout their plants. How do they share data from the myriad of legacy and new control systems throughout their facilities?

What resource can SIs turn to? The answer is MatrikonOPC’s Integrator Partner Program (MIP). The program is launched specifically to help SIs deal with all aspects of data connectivity. It provides members with the training, solution design assistance, and vendor neutral connectivity software needed to successfully help their clients implement optimal data connectivity. The MIP Program also helps SIs to minimize project risks, which is key to prospering in tough times and becoming indispensible to your clients.
