Question:
I’m attempting to connect a modern HMI up to one of my older OPC Servers and I just can’t seem to get them connected. It tells me that the specification on the OPC Server is not supported. They both say they support OPC DA, so what gives?

Answer (Sean Leonard, VP MatrikonOPC):
Your problem most likely lies in the fact that OPC DA has multiple versions of the specification. If your older OPC Server only supports OPC DA 1.0, the earliest specification, and your OPC Client is not backwards compatible to 1.0, you’ve got a problem. This is why it’s important to verify they at least match up on one version. Client/Server products that can convert specifications, such as MatrikonOPC’s Funnel, can be used to make the connection.

Ever get the feeling the world is slowly breaking down around you? Last night I sat down to watch the CBC News and Peter Mansbridge said they had "a massive computer breakdown at the CBC, right across the system right across the country". Not to mention exploding mining operations.. Is it because the economy is bad and no one is paying to fix anything or is it that companies just don’t know when things are going to break?

Why isn’t everyone using OPC to monitor their assets?
