Most plants have re-designed their DCS systems by adding instrumentation and in some cases reducing operators. These quality improvements and centralized control rooms have provided operation optimization, but they have also increased the number of assets for the operators to watch over.
After focused attention to nuisance alarms and rationalization of all the alarms, alarm rates are manageable during normal operation. However alarm flood situations are all too common during upsets and fall outside the ISA 18.2 standard alarm target KPI’s calculated on an operator per hour bases. Plants can achieve these targets during normal operation by applying strategic alarm techniques.
Our alarm management expert Kevin Brown will explain advanced alarm techniques that can be applied to your control systems, including:
· First out alarms
· Group alarming
· Deviation alarms
· Interpretative alarms
The design, application and benefits of each of the techniques will be discussed which you can apply on your computer control system.
